Irritable and bitter
over a stupid phone.
How messed up is that?
So the G1 has no UMA. I *can* get it here. But I can’t afford to ’cause it’d send my cellphone bill through the roof when I use the damn thing.

Okay okay, a one-line Talk Like a Pirate Day post doesn’t count, does it? And the other one was from yesterday, I just didn’t hit submit until today (which is why I lost half of it. Yay)
It’s funny, though. When I started back on my daily posting routine, I was in the middle of a mood slump, pretty down on myself and just down in general. Ironically, I was easily able to post like I’d never posted before. The last couple days I’ve been feeling pretty good. A little punchy, but good. Even looking forward to my (30′th! Dude!) birthday next week. And now I’m having trouble coming up with things to post.
On the other hand, I’ve got a ton of projects planned. The redecorating projects I mentioned before are going well (although a bit slower than I would like. I’m impatient like that) and I’ve got tons of ideas to keep going. I’ll try and take pictures as things progress.
Today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. I just wanted to make sure you knew. That is all.
I don’t really care, I just want a new cellphone. And I want a cellphone that isn’t horrible.
Oh, and I don’t want to have to change carriers to get it. That seems to be the catch right now as the “optimal” cellphone these days is an iPhone. While an iPhone is a nifty little phone and I really think they’re cool, I don’t see it as the be-all end-all of cellphones. First thing missing is UMA, wifi calling using my existing number. A lot of people point out that you will theoretically one day maybe be able to possibly buy an application to let you use VOIP services that you have to pay extra for. UMA is a (currently T-Mobile only) feature that allows my phone to hop on a wifi network of my choice and make unlimited phone calls from that hotspot rather than using the cell network.
Getting this feature freed up enough minutes in my plan that I dropped my landline – and a few months later when I checked to see how many minutes of UMA I was using, I discovered that it was over 1000 a month. Not over 1000 minute, over 1000 UMA minutes. At that point I realized that this is an indispensable feature for me.
There are all sorts of reasons I don’t want to change carriers. More and more I find myself wishing that handsets weren’t locked to one particular company. I mean, when I buy a V-Tech phone, i don’t have to switch to Bell South do I? That said, the new Android phone T-Mobile is coming out with next week really interests me – for a lot of the same reasons the iPhone doesn’t. While I love the Apple products I use regularly I am constantly aware of how trapped I am by their whims.
I had a lot more here, but it all got lost due to an authentication error.
Basically it ended with “well crud, it looks like no Android for DC for another 6 months. screw it.”
and I haven’t posted anything yet today.
So here I am, posting. Today was pretty exhausting, despite it not involving a tremendous amount of physical exertion. I cleaned out a half dozen cabinets, reorganized a couple of shelves, made space where once there was none, and completely emptied a refrigerator in under 10 minutes. Half an hour later I refilled a new one in about as much time.
I was concerned about doing that…the new fridge wasn’t cold yet, but I decided that a) getting cool food in a room-temperature fridge would help it cool down faster and b) the food wasn’t going to stay cool much longer where it was. Oh, the frozen stuff was fine. I had most of the freezer packed into a cooler and a cooler bag. All the really really perishable stuff from the fridge was in another cooler bag. But the rest…well, the rest worried me.
I’m pretty sure it all turned out alright. In any case I threw out a ton of stuff that had been in my fridge for far too long regardless, so it was a good exercise there. Plus I’m pleased about the bottom freezer. Not only won’t things leap at me in a desperate attempt to escape anymore, the freezer on the bottom means better energy efficiency and a better view of what’s in the fridge itself.
I was all set to wonder why this was such a new concept in refrigerators and realized that it’s because of the cold air flowing down that they started with the “ice box” on top. Huh.
In any case, the minor renovations are just getting started. I put in some accent lighting under one set of cabinets this evening, and plan to do the other set either tomorrow or friday. I’ve got a half dozen little projects planned for the weekend. And now I’m planning on building furniture. I’m crazy. I have no idea what I’m doing there. Ah well. It’s in the blood. I’m sure I’ll pick it up. (no offense, Dad, but it has to be in the blood. I got a decent dose of PopPop’s handiness somehow.)
And…um…I guess that’s rather a lot to say for a post I was just making to get my quota in. I guess that’s why you just have to keep it up. The more you write the easier it is.
